Mrs. Azalee H. Johnson, affectionally known as “Lee” was born April 10, 1924, in Florence, SC. She was the daughter of Anna Graham Hennigan and William “Bill” Hennigan. At the age of 101, Mrs. Johnson transitioned to meet her heavenly Father on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
At an early age her Christian walk started at Goodland AME Church as a young adult and later upon her return to Florence, SC at New Grace Temple in Florence where she continued to worship.
She was educated in the public schools of Florence County and loved Christian Music and telling jokes.
Mrs. Johnson enjoyed her profession as a Household Technician; where she was employed by Dr. George Smith and his family of Florence, SC. While living in New York; she continued her profession as she was employed by Reverend Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter, a very influential Minister known to many as Reverend Ike in Rye, NY.
She was a loving mother, sister and friend to all she met. Being an Amazing, Hardworking, Awesome, Magnificent, Kind, Loving, Spiritual, and “Sassy” lady; she enjoyed life.
She was a devoted member for many years with the Order of Eastern Stars.
Mrs. Johnson loved all related to her. She often reminisced about country life and “Praising the Lord.” She overcame many health challenges and Remained “Strong” through it all. PRAISES BE TO GOD AND THANKSGIVING for letting us keep her so long!!!!!!
She was preceded in death by her only sister, Ms. Willie Mae Murray.
Transitioning from this life she leaves to cherish her precious memories five children; her son and caregiver, Sylvester “Bill” Johnson, four daughters, Ms. Sue Harper and Ms. Genevieve Johnson, all of the home (Florence, SC); Mrs. Brenda (Deacon Marvin) Davis of Irmo, SC and Ms. Annie Lee Thornton of Patterson, California. Three son-in-laws Mr. Charles Butler, Mr. Eura Harper and James Thorton preceded her in death. Mrs. Johnson was also blessed with 7 Grandchildren, 19 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren; all of California. She is also survived by two special friends Ms. Ruth Davis and Mr. Raymond Mack and a host of Nephews, Nieces and other loving relatives and dear friends that will miss her dearly.
Family visitation will be held at the home daily 11 AM to 6 PM at 810 Frazier St., Florence.
