Bert Mitchell

Deacon Bert Mitchell was born on September 20, 1930 in Florence, South Carolina, to the late Joseph and Eugenia Johnson Mitchell. He entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 15, 2022.

Bert attended the public schools of Florence, a graduate of Wilson High School, and attended Denmark Area Trade School.  He also served in the United States Army. After an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army, he moved to New Jersey.

Bert dedicated his life to serving God and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Madison, New Jersey, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Missionary, and sang songs of Zion on the Combined Choir. He was ordained as a Deacon and served for over 40 years. After relocating to Florence, South Carolina, Bert renewed his membership at Saint Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a Deacon, taught the Adult Sunday School, was a faithful member of the Brotherhood Association, Saint Beulah Male Chorus and remained active, until his health declined.

In addition to his parents, Joseph and Eugenia Johnson Mitchell, Bert was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Mrs. Mary Louise Hunter-Mitchell, along with several sisters and brothers.

Bert leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife of 28 years, Mrs. Carolyn Charles Mitchell; six children, Herman (Cynthia) Finklea of Darlington, South Carolina, Elder Archie (Ann) G. Hunter of Florence, South Carolina, Bertram (Linda) Mitchell of Albany, New York, Valerie Mitchell-Randolph of Morristown, New Jersey, Rodney Joseph Mitchell of Columbia, South Carolina, and Detra (Wayne) Coleman of Florence, South Carolina; a brother, James E. Mitchell of North Carolina; four sisters, Isadora Washington, Eugenia Wilson of New Jersey, Ethel (Simon) Lee, and Lillie Mitchell both of Florence, South Carolina; several brothers and sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.

Please keep the family of Mr. Bert Mitchell in your thoughts and prayers.

A close friend to the Late Charles and Estella Rokes and family, Godparents of Michael Rokes. It certainly was a shock to lose him but we loved unconditionally. He will be certainly missed and pray that the family has started on the path of healing. God bless you Valerie. Your father was a wonderful man!
