Ms. Bertha Mae "Shorty" Brooks, the daughter of the late Lonnie Brooks and Martha (Eaddy) Brooks was born January 9,1941, in Effingham (Florence County), South Carolina and entered eternal rest on August 30, 2025. After the passing of her parents, “Shorty” along with her late brother Curlee "Curt" Eaddy was raised by their mother's uncle Hamp Thomas and his wife, Hester Thomas. “Shorty” was the youngest of several cousins who grew up on the homestead- all of whom have preceded her in death.
“Shorty” gave birth to two sons, the late Eddie DeWitt "Ted" Brooks who passed on March 8, 2012 and surviving son Clifford (Takara) Brooks; four grandchildren, Raven Brooks of Darlington, SC, Isaiah Brooks, Landen Brooks, and Aya Brooks; other surviving family members would be a beloved niece, Kim Eaddy of Pennsylvania and her children Shakena Eaddy, Charity Willams, John (Jasmine) Williams of Elgin, SC; nephew, Matthew (Joyce) Perkins and other great-grand nieces and nephews, Alice Crawford, Kent Crawford, Robert (Kim) Cussac, Willie "Bill' (Yolanda) Cussac and family, Katrina (Anthony) Tillery and family, Anthony (Vanessa) Cussac and family, Ocie (Roslyn) Cussac and family; faithful family and friends, Thomas (Francena) Cooper, Mrs. Allen James, Beth Freeman, Chucky Merritts, and Angie Jeirodo and family; and a host of family and friends in the Savannah Grove Community.
“Shorty” will forever be remembered as outspoken, observant, and full of life. She was a wonderful cook, a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was a talker and would start a conversation with anyone that would cross her path. She was strong, resilient, and, at times, reserved.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Patricia Smiling of Summerton, SC and Mrs. Sonia “Michelle” Johnson of Sumter, SC for their loving care during Shorty’s twilight years.
Please keep the family of Bertha Mae Brooks in your thoughts and prayers.
