The Beginning of a Blessed Journey

Betty Jean Brown Parrott was born on December 17, 1946, in Darlington, South Carolina, to the late Thelma Wilson Brown and Tim Brown. As the eldest daughter, she was raised in a home where faith in God was not simply taught but faithfully lived. From an early age, she was encouraged to cultivate a personal relationship with Christ, a foundation that would guide every season of her life and shape the remarkable woman she would become.

Surrounded by the love of her family, Betty peacefully entered eternal rest at her home shortly after midnight on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Though her earthly journey has ended, her unwavering faith, compassionate spirit, and extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

A Heart for God, A Passion for People

Betty received her early education in the public schools of Darlington County and proudly graduated from Mayo High School as a member of the Class of 1965. Following graduation, she attended St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and later completed her degree at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina.

Having been grounded in faith from childhood, Betty understood that serving God was not simply an obligation, it was her calling. She began her Christian journey at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Darlington, SC, where she was actively involved throughout her youth. As her faith continued to mature, she later united with Bible Way Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA where she served as a Sunday School teacher and sung on the Gospel Choir. She served the ministry for well over ten years before moving back south. She then united with Trinity Baptist Church in Florence, SC, where she faithfully served for many years until her health declined. Her service included singing in the various church choirs, serving as a devoted member of the Dorcas Missionary Society, teaching Sunday School, helping with Vacation Bible School each year and Annual Youth Day activities, and faithfully investing in the spiritual growth of countless young people. Through every ministry she embraced, Betty exemplified the love of Christ with humility, compassion, grace, and unwavering devotion.

Her passion for children extended far beyond the walls of the church and became the heartbeat of her life’s work. In 1980, Betty began her career with Florence School District One, where she faithfully dedicated herself to educating, mentoring, and nurturing hundreds of students throughout her distinguished career. She began her work within the classroom teaching 1st and 2nd graders before discovering a special calling to work more closely with students as a Reading Interventionist. Believing that literacy was the key to unlocking opportunity, she was deeply committed to ensuring every child could confidently read, comprehend, and apply what they learned. Her patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in each child’s potential empowered countless students to overcome challenges and discover confidence in themselves.

In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Betty served as Site Coordinator for the Extended Day Programs at North Vista Elementary School and Theodore Lester Elementary School, where she continued to provide academic enrichment, guidance, and a safe, nurturing environment for children beyond the traditional school day. Even after retirement, when her health allowed, she gladly returned to North Vista Elementary to volunteer by reading to classrooms, helping with book fairs, and serving wherever she was needed. Education was never simply her profession; it was her ministry. Through her dedication, she forever impacted the lives of countless students, colleagues, families, and friends, leaving an imprint that will continue for generations.

A Love Story Written by Grace

Some love stories are written by chance, but theirs was written by the hand of God. After reuniting with her childhood sweetheart after high school, William “Bobby” Parrott, Betty and Bobby were united in holy matrimony on July 30, 1966, in Elkton, Maryland. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Kia in 1967 and Yolanda in 1970. Betty’s heart, however, was expansive enough to embrace every child God placed in her life, loving each one without distinction and nurturing them as her own. As new opportunities led them back south, the family relocated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Florence, South Carolina in 1979, where they established a home centered on faith, family, service, and love.

The Measure of Her Life

The true measure of Betty’s life cannot be found in titles she held, but in the lives she transformed. She possessed a servant’s heart, a gentle spirit, unwavering integrity, and an abiding faith that radiated through every conversation, every act of kindness, and every life she touched. She never sought recognition; her greatest joy came from serving others and glorifying God through her everyday life.

Family was among Betty’s greatest earthly treasures. She delighted in opening her home to family and friends, creating a place where everyone felt welcomed, loved, and cared for. She found peace in reading the Scriptures and singing hymns, savoring a good fish sandwich, and faithfully supporting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in every endeavor.

Whether attending school events, sporting events, performances, graduations, or simply offering words of encouragement, she was their greatest supporter and loudest cheerleader. To know Betty was to experience genuine kindness, steadfast wisdom, unconditional love, and the comforting presence of someone who truly reflected Christ. She believed in the potential of every child, the power of education, the importance of family, and the life-changing love of Jesus Christ. Her beautiful example will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.

Called Home to Glory

Awaiting Betty’s arrival in Heaven is her devoted husband, William “Bobby” Parrott; her beloved parents, Thelma Wilson Brown and Tim Brown; and her older twin brothers, Frank Wilson and Harry Wilson. 

A Legacy That Lives On

The beautiful legacy of Betty Jean Brown Parrott lives on through the countless lives she nurtured, encouraged, educated, and loved. Her memory will forever be cherished by her beloved children, Kia (Edward) Douglas, Yolanda (NyBius) Harrell, Krystal Anderson (Bernard), and Robert Anderson (Kedra), all of Florence, South Carolina.

She also leaves eleven cherished grandchildren: Kianna (Branden), Alexis (Chris), Zya, Rashaud, Denez, Rashaun, Lauryn, Kanye’, Zion, Kristopher, and Keyerra; five treasured great-grandchildren: Kaleb, Kerrigan, Kelsi, Sage, and Damion; one sister, Mrs. Thelma (Ronald) Ravenell of Awendaw, South Carolina; one brother, Dr. Tim D. Brown of Charleston, South Carolina; one uncle, Mr. Lawrence E. Berry of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers-in-law, Ronald (Doletha) Parrott of Darlington, South Carolina, and Elder Allen Wayne (Barbara) Parrott of Ladson, South Carolina; her devoted lifelong friends, Mary and Bobby McMillan of Florence, South Carolina; along with a host of nieces, nephews, honorary children, honorary grandchildren, extended family members, former students, dear friends, and all whose lives were forever enriched by her love.

Though her earthly assignment has been fulfilled, the seeds of faith she planted, the children she inspired, the wisdom she imparted, and the Christ-like love she demonstrated will continue to bear fruit for generations to come. Her life was a living testimony that greatness is found not in what we accumulate, but in how faithfully we love God and serve others. Truly, she fought a good fight, she finished her course, and she kept the faith.
