Dolores W. Williams

July 2, 1944 — May 31, 2025

Mrs. Dolores Woods Williams, affectionately known as “Joyce,” was born on July 2, 1944, in St. Stephens, South Carolina, to the late Wester Davis and Elovlse Woods. She was the eldest of eighteen children, a role that helped shape her nurturing, responsible, and caring spirit from an early age.

Joyce grew up in the St. Stephens community and was a faithful member of White Chapel Baptist Church during her youth. Her journey in life took her to New York City, where she graduated from Yonkers High School. She later pursued her passion for helping others by earning a nursing degree from Elizabeth Seton College.

Joyce first married John Brooks, and from that union, three children were born: John Brooks, Jesse Brooks, and Velveta Brooks. Later, she met and married Alfonza Williams, and together they welcomed their beloved daughter, Alfredia Williams-Hassane.

After spending over 40 years in New York, Mrs. Williams returned to South Carolina with her husband, where she continued her nursing career at the Medical University of South Carolina and served as a dedicated nurse on call. She also renewed her commitment to the church, becoming a devoted member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church. There, she served faithfully on the Usher Board and had a special passion for working with the Youth Usher ministry and other youth activities.

Mrs. Williams' legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering faith. She leaves to cherish her memory her children: John Brooks, Jesse Brooks, and Velveta Brooks, all of New York City, and Alfredia (Adamou) Williams-Hassane of Pennsylvania. She also helped raise two special grandchildren, Cheyeme Stallings and Daniel Ashley, both of New York. In addition, she is remembered by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, extended family, church family, and dear friends.

Joyce’s life was a reflection of grace, dedication, and compassion. To know her was to love her, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
