Elder Eddie L. Thomas, Sr.

March 20, 1956 — January 7, 2024

Eddie Lee Thomas, Sr. was born on March 20, 1956, in the McLeod Infirmary in Florence, SC. He was the son of the late Evangelist Esther Thomas and the late Edward L. Hedrick. He was raised primarily by his late Grandmother, Janie Moore Thomas. He departed this life peacefully at the age of 67 on January 7, 2024, at McLeod Hospice in Florence, SC, surrounded by his wife, sisters, children, grandchildren, in-laws, and cherished loved ones.

Eddie, affectionately known as “Muscle” during his younger years, was educated in the Florence District 1 public school system. He later returned to school as an adult to complete his high school diploma from Poynor Adult Education Center. He held several jobs in his early life including T&M Grocery as a meat cutter, Morrison’s Restaurant as a dishwasher, and Willis Construction as a Construction worker. In September 1988, he was employed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). His work ethic was unmatched, often braving snow storms and hurricanes while others, including his own family, enjoyed the comfort and safety of their homes. After 29 years of public service, he retired early, due to his failing health, as a Trade Specialist/Supervisor in December 2017.

Eddie was a loyal and beloved friend in the community of North Florence. His childhood home was a favorite gathering spot, partially because of the unending sweets and desserts provided by his grandmother, and partially because he also owned a horse and a pony that neighborhood friends could enjoy. He was dedicated to his family, but could always be found sharing or soliciting a laugh with a family member or friend, often at their own expense. According to his sister Mary, he was an “unpaid comedian”, a very protective brother who kept the boys away, and to whom she credits her late marriage. He was always ready to promote his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys, and did not miss an opportunity to taunt any of his nephews when the Cowboys enjoyed a win. When he’s relaxing at home, if he’s not engrossed in his study Bible, his television is likely tuned to an episode of “Star Trek” or “WWE Smackdown”.

In his childhood, he attended St. Peter Holiness Church in Florence, SC. Eddie gave his life to Christ in 1987 at St. Matthews Mission in Darlington, SC (now known as Glorious Apostolic Church) and was baptized at St. Matthews Southern Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic in Florence, SC. He formally joined Glorious Apostolic Church under the then leadership of Pastor Roceda J. Hines. Since then, he has been a faithful member, a dedicated servant leader, and an effective witness in the cause of advancing God’s kingdom. Eddie was ordained as a Deacon in 1990. He served faithfully on the Deacon’s Board, taught Sunday School and Bible Study, and served as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent. He was ordained as a Minister in 1993 and was later ordained as an Elder in August 1996.

He continued steadfastly in the gospel under the leadership of Bishop Joseph Hines, serving in any capacity where he could be found helpful. In addition to serving faithfully in ministry at his home church for many years, he also served as an Interim Pastor of This Rock Holiness Church in Florence, SC, and New Beginnings Holiness Church in Alcolu, SC.

Most importantly, his ministry was not only demonstrated in the sanctuary. He did not hesitate to talk about Jesus to whomever he met; wherever he went. If you asked him, he would tell you he was shy, but boldness abounded when it came to the Gospel of Jesus and inviting people to Christ. His ministry was lived at home and demonstrated in the neighborhood. He was obsessed with his pick-up trucks and vans, not as a material possession, but as a tool for service. He made his truck available to all who needed it and his vans were always a means to transport his family and others to church. When he accepted Christ, he did not abandon his lifelong friends. Instead, he was a compassionate preacher who went back to share the gospel with those with whom he grew up. In fact, one of the local corner stores and neighborhood hangout spots where he would gather with friends later became This Rock Holiness Church where he served as interim Pastor. He truly believed in serving where he lived and ensured everyone he encountered would hear the message of Jesus.

Eddie met the love of his life and soulmate, Rose Marie Hines, in 1973 at the age of 17. According to “sources unknown” (Rose), he declared to his high school friend that he was going to “marry that girl” after only seeing the back of her head. On August 5, 1977, they were united in matrimony at the Florence County courthouse. Despite their humble beginnings, his commitment to his marriage and his family was replete with an abundance of love. It was evident to all that he loved his wife - his “main squeeze” – and was committed to being a provider and protector for his family. He and Rose later renewed their vows on August 2, 1997, at Glorious Apostolic Church in Darlington, SC. This holy union was blessed with 4 children: 2 daughters and 2 sons.

In addition to his parents and grandmother, Eddie was preceded in death by his brother Donnie L. Thomas.

Eddie leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Rose Marie Thomas of the home; two daughters, Rociana T. Hines of Darlington, SC and Varonica E. Wilson (Angelo Wilson) of Jonesboro, GA; two sons, Eddie L. Thomas, Jr. of Largo, MD and Damien C. Thomas, Darlington, SC; nine grandchildren, LaQuadric Q. Hines, Javeta “KeKe” Hines, Ayshalia V.J.
