Ella's Life Journey
Mrs. Ella Mae Smith Grace was the sixth child born to Tiney Oscar Smith and Martha Smith. She entered labor to reward on July 11, 2025.
Ella's five siblings James, John, Morris, Thurman Smith, and Dorothy Smith Lott all preceded her in death. She was the last sibling of James Oscar (J.O.) Smith, founder of Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.
She attended school in Marlboro County and later furthered her Education at Claflin College in Orangeburg S.C which she received a BA in Early Education.
Ella met the love of her life Rudolph Grace and from this union two children were born, Gregory and Dwayne. Together Ella and Rudolph reared their sons but wanted to have a good foundation for them. Later they became the proprietors of Grace Apartments.
She taught school in the Darlington County School System for 22 years.
Rudolph and her two grandsons Jacobie and Jackson Grace also preceded her in death.
Through her trials Ella never gave up, she enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.
Ella was a faithful member of Evans Metropolitan A.M.E Zion Church where she served in many capacities during the years as Church Announcer, Connectional Member of Lay Council, Class Leader, Vacation Bible School Assistant, Deaconess and Supply Captain of the Missionary Board, Mother of the Church, and various other committees. She loved her church family but most importantly she loved the Lord.
Her community affiliations included: Member of Golden Star Chapter # 371, Marlboro County Branch NAACP, Jolly Few and the Friendship Club.
Ella enjoyed traveling, shopping, fine dining, attending gospel singing programs and community events. Wherever she went she never met a stranger. She possessed a beautiful smile that could light up a room and would say "hey there." She was a sharing, caring, giving, and loving soul. Always willing to help others and give words of encouragement.
She leaves to cherish her memories are her sons Gregory and Dwayne Grace who she truly adored. Two daughters-in-law Otelia (Tee) and Sandy Grace. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends. Special cousins Monroe and Gwen White, Wilhemenia Brown and Edward and Gail Harrington. Two loving and devoted care givers Brenda Nelson and Diane Pate.
Ella touched many lives while on her journey of life and has now reached her destination, home to be with the Lord. Glory be to God for the beautiful life she lived.
