Mr. Hallie Phillip “Brock” Brockington was born to the late Willie and Bonnie K. Washington Brockington on December 6, 1955 in Darlington, South Carolina. He was the youngest of five children. He peacefully departed this life at his home on Sunday, February 4, 2024.
Hallie Brockington moved to New York and was raised in the Bronx on College Avenue. He attended Taft High School. Soon after, he completed his G.E.D. He attended John Jay College for Criminal Justice. He was employed at the New York City Transit Authority in Brooklyn, New York. Hallie was known around his friends in the neighborhood as “Brock.”
In the late 1980’s, Hallie relocated back to South Carolina to be closer to his mother and family. In 1990, he furthered his education at Florence Darlington Technical College. He received a Certificate from the college as well as from Palmetto Train. Thereafter, he began to showcase his skills, abilities and expertise as a Welder, Sheet Metal Plumber, Fence Installer, Warehouse Worker and Transporter for a Home Health Care Facility. Hallie was like a “jack of all trades.”
Hallie grew up in a home where going to church was essential. He had a love of reading the bible. Even as a young child, Hallie, just like his mother, was very spiritual. When he relocated back to South Carolina, he rededicated his life to the Lord at Glorious Apostolic Church in Darlington, South Carolina. He was taught under the leadership of the late Pastor Roceda Hines. His mother, Evangelist Bonnie Washington, served alongside her. During his earlier years as a member, he served on the Choir and the Usher Board.
“Brock,” as he was affectionately called by friends and “UNC” by nieces and nephews, enjoyed listening to gospel music. His favorite song was “When I Rose This Morning.” He had a passion for reading various books on how to build his love for the bible. He loved to watch many sports; especially football. His favorite team was the New York Giants. Cooking was his specialty. He believed he was the best at cooking. No one could tell him otherwise. If you were in the way, he’ll tell you “get out the way” with a quickness. Hallie was known as an “Herbal Specialist.” According to family members, he was good at creating his own special herb seasonings.
Hallie met Mary L. Hines Wilson in 1995. They were united in holy matrimony on September 7, 1996. They had been married 27 years.
Hallie was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jacqueline and Bonnie Jean.
Hallie leaves to cherish his memories: his lovely wife, Mary L. Brockington of Darlington, South Carolina; a daughter, Sharmaine Cummings of Charlotteville, Virginia; a stepdaughter, Arline (Donnell) Cuffee of Chester, Virginia; a stepson, Cecil Wilson, Jr. of Darlington, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Trevon Fields, Rory Adams, Tyann Hines, Ra’Sean Wilson, Azariah Wilson and Zymere Wilson; one great grandchild, Jo-Jo; two siblings, Willie Brockington of Raliegh, North Carolina and Carolyn A. Brockington of Florence, South Carolina; six brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
