Harmon Spann, Jr.

M r. Harmon Spann, Jr. was born in Lee County, South Carolina on October 24, 1943 and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. He was the second oldest of seven children born to the late Rosa Lee Spann Burris. He departed this earthly life on July 27, 2026.

He attended Lincoln High School in Sumter, South Carolina. After high school “June” enlisted in the United States Army where he served three years. After leaving the Army, he worked various jobs. He retired from Novamet located in Wyckoff, New Jersey. For those who knew Spann, they knew him to be a loving, caring, and ambitious person who never shied away from being honest.

Spann loved playing cards, reading his Bible, watching and playing sports. He also loved dancing. He enjoyed singing on the Male Chorus at New AME Zion Church, Paterson, New Jersey where he was a member for 46 years. He faithfully served New AME Zion Church in many Ministries, including Member of the Steward Board, Men’s Day Committee, Hospitality Committee, Culinary Arts Committee, and the Sunday Church School, until relocating to Florence, South Carolina. Brother Harmon Spann, Jr. was also a member of Prince Hall St. Matthew’s #10, Passaic, New Jersey.

We will always miss his contagious laughter, warm smile, a keen sense of humor, and his deep love for his nephews and nieces. To know him was to love him and he will truly be missed.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Rosa Lee Spann Burris; son, Christopher Harvey; two brothers, Ulysses Burris and Kenly Burris, Jr.; two nephews, Leonard Ledwell and Dennis Ledwell.

He leaves to cherish his memories of love; three sisters; Ammie Ledwell, Garam Isaac, Maggie (Marion) McDonald; one brother, Freddie (Patricia) Burris; one sister-in-law, Mattie L. Burris and God-Daughter, Laila DeJesus; a devoted niece, Ruby N. Cotton; and a host of friends and family.
