Joe A. Grimes

Mr. Joe Allen Grimes better known as “Pop” was born August 11, 1941 to the late Grover Grimes and Carrie Sherrill Grimes in Statesville, North Carolina. He departed his life to return to the open arms of His Creator on Friday, July 23, 2021.

Joe received his formal education through Unity High School in Statesville, North Carolina, where he graduated in 1959, and was drafted into the United States Armed Forces. While in the Army he served as a Spec 3 truck driver.

In 1966, he ventured into Fiber Industry Salisbury Plant in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1974, he transferred to the Palmetto Plant in Darlington, South Carolina as an Engineer and Supervisor to help get the plant up and running. He traveled to Brazil and Mexico to help with getting the plants up and running. He retired from Fiber Industries now known as Wellman after providing 55 years of service to the Company.

Joe was united in marriage to Brenda Ann Kimbrough, this union was blessed with five children.

In his free time everyone knew how much he loved to deep sea fish with his buddies and invite everyone over to partake in the feast. He was a great mechanic and enjoyed working and repairing cars for family and friends. Pop was loving, caring, outgoing, loved to dance, and very giving, and loved providing for his family like no other.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Grimes and Carrie Sherrill Grimes; two brothers, Bill Grimes and Bob Grimes; a sister, Maggie Grimes Parker; a nephew, Jimmy Murdock; and a son-in-law, Keith Small.

Joe leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving wife of 58 years, Brenda Ann Kimbrough of the home; three daughters, Durinda “Dodie” Grimes of Darlington, South Carolina, Donna Grimes Small of Darlington, South Carolina, and Joy Grimes (Craig A.) Walker of Florence, South Carolina; two sons, Jeffrey L. Pass and Stephen Pass both of Statesville, North Carolina; a sister, Dorothy G. Sturghill and a brother, Jay Grimes (Jerry Grimes) both of Statesville, North Carolina; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren, Brooke, Blaire, Bria, and Ariyonna, who were the apple of his eye; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and special friends.
