John Henry Gardner entered into eternal life on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the age of 86. The youngest of sixteen children was born to the late James Webster and the late Mable Brown Gardner on February 4, 1939 in Florence County, SC.
John was educated in the public schools of Florence County. He was a proud member of the Wilson High School Class of 1958, where he also played on the football team.
John accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and joined Wayside Chapel Baptist Church where he worshipped faithfully for many years. He was known by those who knew him best for playing his bass guitar, quick wit and sense of humor.
John enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country.
John gained employment with the City of Florence Police Department and was one of the first black Police Officer in the city. He later became a OTR (Over the Road) Truck Driver for many years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, James Webster and Mable Brown Gardner; siblings; one grandson, Brandon Mims; and one great-grandson, RJ Dennis.
John leaves to cherish his fond memories are his beloved two children, John Eric (Johnna) Gardner and Rhonda Gardner both of Effingham, SC; one sister in-law, Mary Gardner of Florence, SC; four grandchildren, Jessica (Roderick) Dennis of Gainesville, FL, Erica (Darrell) Graham of Darlington, SC, John Eric “EJ” (Latisha Mann) Gardner, Jr. of Florence, SC, Jacob T. “JT” Gardner of Effingham, SC; six great grandchildren, Chance Mason of Florence, SC, DaShawn Lucas of Darlington, SC, Mirakle Dennis, Heaven Dennis, Nevaeh Dennis and Promise Dennis all of Gainesville, FL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Family will receive friends at 3066 Red Berry Circle, Effingham, SC.
