d. July 11, 2023

Lizzie Ann Fulmore Thomas was the fourth child born to the late Theophilous and Minnie Eaddy Fulmore of Lake City, South Carolina. She was born and raised in Florence County; and she loved her hometown – the City by the Lake.  She was a 1960 graduate of Carver High School. Lizzie attended South Carolina State College where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1964.

Lizzie was an outstanding educator and taught for 30 years in the public schools of Florence County. Most of her career was spent shaping the young minds of 4th graders at Johnsonville Elementary School. Lizzie persevered as the only “Black Teacher” in the school for many years. She held leadership roles in the National Education Association in order to make the profession equitable for all teachers. In 1994/1995, Lizzie was awarded the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching.

In addition, Lizzie also shared her love for her local Church – Salem United Methodist Church. She taught and assisted with Vacation Bible School and confirmation classes. She enjoyed Wednesday night Bible Study and cooking with her “Kitchen Crew.”

Lizzie was a devoted wife and mother. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Ed Latson Thomas for 47 years and unto this union they were blessed with three daughters, Schenell, Scherell, and Schevelle.

Lizzie leaves the following to cherish her memories; her loving and devoted daughters: Schenell (Willie) Martin of Stockbridge, Ga, Scherell (James) McElveen of Effingham, SC, and Schevelle (Tony) Boyce of Piedmont, SC.
